Prior military service?

The New York State Police welcomes applicants who have served in the military and are looking for a rewarding and exciting career. With a paramilitary structure and specialized assignments, those with military experience can continue to utilize their skills in a career with the State Police. The New York State Police offers several benefits for qualifying military applicants.

Supplemental Exam Process

If you have applied but can't attend the regular exam period, you may request to take a military supplemental exam by showing your military orders.

Preference Credits

If you are or were a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on a full-time active duty basis, you may be eligible to have extra credits added to your passing score on the written exam.

Deferment

Military veterans may be eligible for an extension of the application age limit and active duty individuals may participate in the selection process if they are within 6 months of separation from service.

Exam Locations for Military Personnel
With the 2022 exam, the New York State Police have switched from a paper-pencil test to computer-based testing.
In addition to testing sites across the United States, our exam will be offered for military personnel at 112 locations worldwide.
