Tattoo Policy


Overview

Candidates are expected to adhere to New York State Police standards, which emphasize maintaining a professional appearance. The following guidelines outline the policies regarding tattoos, body art, and piercings for individuals seeking to become New York State Troopers.

Tattoos or body art are permitted, provided they are not located in the following areas:

  • Head
  • Neck, including the chest area visible in a V-neck shirt
  • Face
  • Hands, wrists, or fingers

Exception:  A single band tattoo on one finger is allowed, no wider than 3/8 inch.

All tattoos will be reviewed to ensure they do not go against the policy and values of the New York State Police. 


Body Piercings

  • No visible facial or body piercings are allowed while in uniform or business attire.

Important for Candidates

  • You can still attend Candidate Processing Weekend with visible tattoos.
    • Tattoos that do not meet the policy must be removed before you can be appointed to the Academy.
    • Tattoo removal will be confirmed prior to the Academy.

Back or Chest Tattoos

Tattoos on the chest or back must be covered by wearing a properly fitted short-sleeve uniform shirt with no portion of the tattoo showing.
